Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
